Synopsis :

Kang Hye Na’s parents died from a plane accident and her stringent grandfather brought her up. She is the only successor of Kang-san Group, and also the owner of the ‘Lady Castle’. She lives a ‘princess-like’ life with many servants but she just can’t find a suitable personal butler. Hye-na is strong-headed, selfish and the world revolves around her. This is all because she could not experience the warmth of family when she grew up. She is very self-centered and ignorant about work for she is super rich that she does not need to earn a living. Until one day, out of pure coincidence on the road, she comes across Seo Dong-chan. He makes Hye-na do community service for causing harm to him on the road and for stubbornly refusing to apologize to him. He later appears in front of her as her household manager, her personal butler! Kang Hye Na makes every effort to throw him out of her Castle, but this guy has tenacity in him! His perseverance and endurance knows no limit.

My thoughts my says :

Yoon Eun Hye acted very well as the bossy and spoilt Kang Hye Na. Losing her parents at a young age, she was a lonely child. She neither knows nor feels the emotional warmth from others. For this reason, she is completely indifferent and oblivious to others' feelings and totally self-centered. Whenever she opens her mouth, she spills out blunt remarks or adds awkwardness to conversations. She was neither willing to get married nor willing to take over the Kang-san Group though they were the wishes of her grandfather. The reason being that she was still thinking of her first love. I think her acting skill shows when she was transformed from a couldn’t care less and overly protected princess to a hardworking lady. These transformations were all due to Seo Dong-chan, the personal butler who taught her to do things with sincerity. She also learnt to become stronger and to survive when left on her own. You can see Yoon Eun Hye in many beautiful dresses and costumes. This is the splendid part of the drama to see her displaying her beauty.

Yoon Sang Hyeon acted as a kind Seo Dong-chan, who gave up going to university and took the road of the gigolo in order to make money for operations of his mother with acute sickness. Dong-chan dropped the career as a gigolo as soon as his mother passed away. All he got was a heavy debt resulted from charges for his mother's operations. One day, a woman, Kang Hye Na, showed up and stimulated his competitive spirit. She was one of the most arrogant and impudent daughters in the wealthy upper class families in Korea's high society. Dong-chan made up his mind to enter the Castle and became her butler on the purpose of changing his whole life. In the end, they saw eyes to eyes and they fell in love, for the opposite attracts. Yoon Sang Hyeon acted as a gallant butler, protected Yoon Eun Hye all the times and catered to all her needs. His acting is very natural and funny. The story has a good ending.

Kim Jung Hwa as Wang Joo Hyun

Synopsis :

Kim Bum Sang was a university arts lecturer who got passed over for promotion due to lack of family connection. He specialized in examining and restoring archeological treasures. All he wanted was to make a name for himself and get ahead in this world. He was an art expert who used high-tech gadgets and his extensive knowledge to detect forgeries… Heo Cho Hwi, on the other hand, worked as an inspector at the Cultural Heritage Administration Theft Division, in the hope that it would help her find her father, who was a treasure hunter-thief and had been missing for 7 years. The story evolves art thefts and how these two people clashes in their pursuit and how they find love along the way. There are other people such as the inspectors who delicate themselves to catching tomb raiders out of patriotism and tomb raiders who can tell apart a Goryeo celadon from a white celadon by just smelling the dirt surrounding them. These people are involved in cases surrounding cultural heritages and the ups and downs of their lives unfold in this drama.

My thoughts my says :

I think Lee Dong Gun acted very well as Kim Bum Sang. Right after a long break from his TV series in 2006, this is quite a come back! He acted as the suave and well dressed university arts lecturer with a flirtatious roving eyes for beautiful women. His character later matured to define him as a man who can commit to one woman when he falls in love. He also has a sense of righteousness towards the stolen archeological treasures and eventually, he stood out to fight for his friends’ lives. He realised that he was no longer the guy who just wanted to make a name for himself through all crafty ways. He also had a strong bond with Heo Cho Hwi’s brother, Heo Gyoon . I quite enjoy the part when Heo Gyoon kept calling Kim Bum Sang brother-in-law right after the first meeting with him.

Kim Sun Ah is a very good actress. She is the heroine, Heo Cho Hwi, in this drama. She has always been the righteous and sensible girl, who feels that it is better to keep a thief in the prison then to be left on the run. She gave simple reasons that the thief’s family will be able to visit him anytime in the prison and at the same time he will be fed and will have a bed to sleep. She had all these thoughts out of the concerns for her father, who was a thief and had lost contact with her for seven years. She was actually a soft-hearted person but looked cool and stern on the surface. Though she did not agree with Kim Bum Sang initially in cases of the stolen cultural heritage pieces that they have to solve together, she realized she had fallen for him when he helped her to find the missing links to testify her father’s death and her brother’s innocence. She was shy in expressing her feelings towards the man she loved and was living in the memory of her father.

Although nothing much is said about how their relationship will develop, it was subtly hinted by Chief Noh Jung Pil during his farewell speech that both of them will marry. It is thus a happy ending for sure with a rather satisfactory kiss of love and encouragement from Heo Cho Hwi (Kim Sun Ah) to Kim Bum Sang (Lee Dong Gun).

Sweet 18

Title: Sweet 18
Genre: Romance and Comedy
Starring: Han Ji Hye, Lee Dong Gun, Lee Da Hae
Episodes: 16
Aired: 2004

Main Cast:
Han Ji Hye – Yoon Jung Sook
Lee Dong Gun – Kwon Hyuk Joon
Lee Da Hae – Moon Ga Young

Synopsis:
Kwon Hyuk-Joon's grandfather, the head of the traditional Kwon family agrees to an arranged marriage between his grandson (Lee Dong Gun) and Yoon Jung-Sook (Han Ji Hye) when Yoon Jung-Sook is born. 18 years later, the two families lose contact because soon after the contract is signed, Jung-Sook's family encounters financial issues and is forced to run away.
Meanwhile, Jung-Sook has grown up to be a rebellious and strong-willed girl who just wants to live her life as she sees fit. With little aspirations, she is the direct foil of her achievement-bound counterpart, Hyuk-Joon. When the two meet each other, they clash horribly; Jung-Sook thinks her fiancee is nothing but boring, and Hyuk-Joon believes Jung-Sook to be nothing but an immature child. Despite all this they do marry. The rest of the series follows their life living together as a couple, and the obstacles they are faced with.

My thoughts, my say:
This Korean drama is a romantic comedy. I enjoyed it very much for a few reasons. Firstly, it is starred by Lee Dong Gun, my favourite actor. He acted as a very loving husband, Hyuk-Joon, whose feeling for his wife was very sincere and true. He is a noble character and he was clear with his decision of the arranged marriage and his feelings did not waver even when he was faced with temptations.

Jung-Sook is a very positive girl. Though at the age of 18, she was much more matured than her peers for she was willing to take the plunge to get married with her dream guy, even though Hyuk-Joon has chosen her because she seems quite a good option as opposed to no options.

I am not recommending girls to quit their study to go get marry at a young age. However, this movie is recommended for older couples who are dating, or married people. In the show it is the process of how the two of them live their lives as a couple in a marriage. There are times where it shows that give and take for each other with endurance and trust as the main components to hold the marriage together when faced with situations that causes misunderstandings. There is a saying that was quoted by Hyuk-Joon's grandfather : “The longer the distance travelled, you will know how strong is your horse.” This simply means you will know how good and how trustworthy is your man through time living together with him. Time will tell and time is a good factor to reveal the true hearts for each other. Hyuk-Joon’s grandfather played an important role in the show as he is the man that arranged their marriage. As an elder, he was very concerned about his grandchildren’s happiness. He told them to treat each other with real hearts, real feelings for each other and that will get them through all obstacles in life.

In the show, Jung-Sook is lost about what she should do with her life. What dreams can she achieve and what could she become. It does not matter even if you do not see it now. Just like the stars are always there even in a cloudy night when you can’t see them. It does not mean that the stars are not in the sky, they are only temporary hidden. So continue to try and search for your dreams and one day you will find your hidden talent.
